Thesis | Meta_ Redesigning Klafthmonos Square




An innovative proposal for a major square in Central Athens. The project connects the historical layers of the city and introduces an adaptive design with dynamic structural elements to address the complex problems of the contemporary metropolis.


Through the bleak landscape that has been shaped by the collapse of the economy, the city of Athens emerges in social and cultural crisis. The consequences of this phenomenon are reflected on the already discredited public space of the city, condemning it to a rampant degradation and desertification.

In this context, we choose to deal with the historic center of Athens, focusing on Klafthmonos Square, a non-indigestible area with occasional function, cut-off from the urban environment and unregistered to the collective memory of the city’s inhabitants. It is an empty "container" in the heart of Athens. The square is located at the point where three different historical layers of the city overlap: the topological layer upon which the ancient wall is traced, the organically developed layer of the old city, with reference to the St. Theodore Church and the layer of the neoclassical city, with reference to the buildings of the Neoclassical Trilogy.





The design’s central idea is the neoclassical layer’s detachment from the topology, a gesture which highlights and attributes vital space to the city’s layers. 

Two squares are formed in two different levels with clearly distinct geometrical characteristics and unconventional materials; wood and soil. The proposal also includes integration with Korai street, which is redesigned to give priority to pedestrians and to restore the continuity of the athenian public space.

Our intention is to create an action platform, a space that can potentially accommodate diverse activities. In order to achieve flexibility, mobile elements with mechanical properties are installed, introducing variability to the square. Furthermore, the inclusion of a Music Conservatory serves flexibility, since music is open to everyone, allows ad-hoc meetings, spontaneity and releases the public space from consumption and shop operating hours.

Through our intervention we envision a public space functioning all-day, open, with uninterrupted flows and continuous visibility, a counterpoint to the current conditions of the square and its surrounding area.

Lecture | Relation Networks_ Towards 'Design 2.0'



From the dawn of the digital network revolution until today, Architecture has entered a transition process. It seems that gradually, the conditions towards the rise of a new paradigm for design mature; ‘Design 2.0’ will be based on less static, more dynamic methods and rules, in order to connect with the ever-changing needs of the built environment and its users. In an effort to trace the direction of these changes, our ‘vehicle’ is the dynamics of music; music with elements of dialogue, improvisation, action and generative interactions. The theories that are ‘networked’ to support ‘Design 2.0’ come from a wide range of knowledge fields; systems logic, cybernetics, mathematics, biomimetics, artificial intelligence and chemistry. We shift from designing objects, to designing relations between parts within the framework of systems, not necessarily architectural. Through the scope of these approaches, the role of the Architect, the essence of creativity and the relation of Architecture with time is redefined. Quo Vadis?

Carlo Ratti | Architecture that Senses and Responds



With his team at SENSEable City Lab, MIT's Carlo Ratti makes cool things by sensing the data we create. He pulls from passive data sets -- like the calls we make, the garbage we throw away -- to create surprising visualizations of city life. And he and his team create dazzling interactive environments from moving water and flying light, powered by simple gestures caught through sensors.

Carlo Ratti is a civil engineer and architect who teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he directs the SENSEable City Laboratory.
