The perception that leading architect and urbanist, Le Corbusier, had throughout a large chunk of the 20th Century, was that highways would allow uninterrupted traffic movement; any resident of Los Angeles will tell you that he is quite markedly incorrect with this assumption. Although projects such as the M25 are a good example of how highways can compliment the workings of a city (in the case of the M25, which circles the outskirts of London, drivers can travel around the edge of London before heading inwards, instead of joining the gridlock of the city from the start) there are certainly large-scale flaws at play.

Many agree with Corbusier’s point of view, claiming that dual carriage ways and highways are the lifeline for many cities. They give traffic direction to the core of the urban realm and target the most “important” locales. In doing so they create a very unbalanced spread of people across the city. New highway construction can, in fact, ruin communities – as less vehicular through-flow means less customers for local business, (potentially) lower land values and a completely different sense of place. Simply, highways do not belong in city centers.

Πρόσφατα πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πανεπιστήμιο του Delft το workshop "INDESEM/11_ Losing Ground" με συμμετοχή 80 σπουδαστών αρχιτεκτονικής από όλο τον κόσμο. Στο περιεκτικό "mission statement" που ακολουθεί, διατυπώνεται ένας επίκαιρος προβληματισμός: "Ποιός είναι ο ρόλος του αρχιτέκτονα σε ένα κόσμο κατακλυσμένο από νέες μορφές πολυμέσων;". Το ερώτημα αυτό βρίσκεται στο αφετηριακό σημείο της έρευνάς μας. Ας ξανασκεφτούμε λοιπόν τη θέση μας, σε μια εποχή όπου η Αρχιτεκτονική "χάνει έδαφος" από την επέλαση των New Media.

Have you already used the ‘Like’ button today? Do you still send letters by post? Where do you interact more with your friends – on Skype or at a café? In recent years our means of interacting with one another have changed dramatically thanks to emerging virtual realities, globalization and mass customization. Historically, built space has been a platform for social interaction; how can architecture ensure a relevant public role in this emerging media driven society, which seems to operate entirely separate from traditional collective spaces?In the face of this phenomenon, it could be said that architecture as we know it is losing ground to new cultural forms. The possibilities of instantly expressing and sharing our myriad individual thoughts and beliefs, increasingly at anytime and anyplace, are creating fundamental changes in society and consequently our spatio-temporal practices.
Where, as designers, do we now take our cues: The liquid phenomenology of the screen? The emergent qualities of advanced algorithms? Endless iterations of ‘related links’? The grassroots democracy of the ‘Like’ button? Architecture sees itself in a moment in which existing paradigms have to be redefined and new values have to be critically evaluated and tested so as to be able to properly form an active approach to the challenges posed by an increasing divide between old and new social realities.

Designers must find ways to operate in this new context. Is architecture able to provide new models for the intersection between the media-driven society and physical environment, and can this be balanced with traditional social interaction and engagement? In recent years we have seen various suggestions; liquid, interactive architecture, ever mutating according to the needs of the user, ‘blurring’ architecture, based on spatial qualities suggested the computer screen; open-source urbanism, employing the participatory dynamics of games; light, nomadic urban forms made possible by infrastructural and communications networks, and so on. Conversely, is it still possible to argue that there is no pressing need for change, that we should instead reinforce historical types and stable, tried-and-tested notions of social space?
INDESEM 2011 will investigate these questions with appropriate philosophical and practical tools. It will do so in a one-week workshop for 80 international students, comprising lectures, excursions, exhibitions, debates, documentaries and more.

Η δομή του δικτύου αυτού βασίζεται στην οργάνωση ενός ψηφιακού “user interface”, όπου ο χρήστης λαμβάνει ενεργητικό ρόλο δημιουργού. Πρωταρχικοί στόχοι του σχεδιασμού είναι η ενθάρρυνση δημιουργικών δράσεων, η εισαγωγή νέων οπτικοακουστικών τεχνολογιών πλοήγησης στην πόλη και η διαμόρφωση μιας νέας πρότασης για την κατοίκηση στην Αθήνα του μέλλοντος. Με τον τρόπο αυτό, τα Εξάρχεια αποκτούν ανταγωνιστικό πλεονέκτημα στο πλέγμα των συνοικιών του Κέντρου. Προτεραιότητα δίνεται στον πεζό και το ποδήλατο, με την οδο Θεμιστοκλέους να πεζοδρομείται πλήρως. Οι παρεμβάσεις μικρής κλίμακας μετατρέπουν γυμνές μεσοτοιχίες και οικόπεδα σε πλατφόρμες δράσεων: εκεί σχεδιάζονται υπαίθριοι κινηματογράφοι, χώροι άθλησης και κατακόρυφα παρτέρια φρούτων και λαχανικών. Στην πλατεία Εξαρχείων τοποθετείται ένα πρότυπο ημιυπαίθριο πανεπιστήμιο με εφαρμογές διαδικτυακής τεχνολογίας, και οι ζώνες φύτευσης επεκτείνονται. Η νέα πρόταση κατοίκησης χωροθετείται στους πρόποδες του λόφου Στρέφη και απευθύνεται σε φοιτητές και νέες οικογένειες: κυρίαρχη πρόθεση είναι η σύνδεση των Εξαρχείων με τον πράσινο λόφο και η διείσδυση του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος στον αστικό ιστό.

Το User Interface του “Minority Report” στο TED2010

Έχετε δει την ταινία Minority Report του Steven Spielberg με τον Tom Cruise; Αν όχι σας την προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα, αφού το σενάριο ειδικά είναι πολύ καλό και μπροστά από την εποχή μας, σχεδόν προφητικό. Ένα μέρος μάλιστα της ταινίας είναι ήδη πραγματικότητα και αναφέρομαι στο εντυπωσιακό user interface, που είχε ο υπολογιστής της ταινίας. Πρόκειται για ένα project πάνω στο οποίο δούλευε η εταιρία Oblong, μέχρι πρότινος ήταν απόρρητο και όσοι έτυχε να παρακολουθήσουν κάποιο demo video παρουσίασης δεν έδιναν την παραμικρή λεπτομέρεια στην δημοσιότητα, αφού εκτός των άλλων μέρος της τεχνολογίας του ερευνούσε και η Αμερικανική κυβέρνηση στα πλαίσια της ανάπτυξης υπολογιστικών συστημάτων επόμενης γενιάς. Όμως η Oblong πήγε στο TED2010 και άφησε το κοινό άφωνο με την δουλειά της!

Ο John Underkoffler ανέβηκε στην σκηνή και φορώντας ειδικά γάντια άρχισε να αλληλεπιδρά με φόρμες και φωτογραφίες, που βρισκόταν σε μια οθόνη μπροστά του! Προσέξτε την λεπτομέρεια: μιλάμε για μια ζωντανή επίδειξη κι όχι κάποιο video. Μάλιστα σε ένα σημείο της επίδειξης πήρε έναν χαρακτήρα από μια ταινία και τον έβαλε σε μια άλλη, όπου συνέχιζε την κίνηση του. Πως; Με τα γάντια και μόνο, κάνοντας χειρονομίες, “πιάνοντας” τα στοιχεία που ήθελε, χωρίς να χρησιμοποιεί ποντίκι ή πληκτρολόγιο.

Κυβερνητικές υπηρεσίες, πανεπιστήμια και εταιρίες έχουν ήδη χρησιμοποιήσει την τεχνολογία και σύντομα με κάποιον τρόπο αυτή θα φτάσει και στους καταναλωτές. Πόσο σύντομα; O Underkoffler υποστήριξε ότι αν σε πέντε χρόνια αγοράσουμε κάποιον υπολογιστή, τότε θα έχουμε στα χέρια μας και αυτή την τεχνολογία! Άλλωστε ήδη η Microsoft, η Hitachi και άλλοι κατασκευαστές ετοιμάζουν κονσόλες, όπου ο χρήστης θα αλληλεπιδρά μαζί τους με… χειρονομίες, όπως ο Tom Cruise στην ταινία!

Και αφού αναφερθήκαμε σε αυτή, αλήθεια πόσο τυχαίο ήταν αυτό το προφητικό (όπως αποδείχθηκε) σενάριο; Καθόλου! Γιατί ο John Underkoffler, πριν γίνει ένας εκ των ιδρυτών της Oblong δούλευε για 15 χρόνια στο Media Lab του ΜΙΤ. Εκεί τον επισκέφθηκαν άνθρωποι της παραγωγής της ταινίας, που ήθελαν καινοτόμες ιδέες για το user interface, που θα έκανε την εμφάνιση του σε κάποιες σκηνές, ιδέες που μέχρι τότε κανείς δεν είχε φανταστεί.

Δούλεψε ως επιστημονικός σύμβουλος με τους ηθοποιούς πάνω στο πως θα αλληλεπιδρούσαν με τον υπολογιστή, στο αποτέλεσμα των κινήσεων τους. Φυσικά όσα βλέπουμε εκεί δεν είναι πραγματικά, αφού πρώτα οι ηθοποιοί έκαναν κινήσεις και έπειτα προστέθηκε η εικόνα του υπολογιστή ψηφιακά, άλλα όλο αυτό έκανε τον Underkoffler να θέλει οπωσδήποτε να προσφέρει ένα τέτοιο user interface στο κοινό! Και κάπως έτσι φτάνουμε στο σήμερα.

Η Oblong των 25 υπαλλήλων βγαίνει από το λεγόμενο stealth mode, της φάσης του απόλυτου απορρήτου δηλαδή, τον Νοέμβριο του 2008, άλλα μόλις αυτές τις μέρες αποκάλυψε το έργο της στο κοινό του TED. Και αν πριν λίγες εβδομάδες θεωρούσαμε το iPad το μέλλον των υπολογιστών, αποδεικνύεται ότι ναι μεν αποτελεί το πρώτο βήμα, άλλα το project της Oblong είναι το δεύτερο ή ακόμα και το τρίτο!

A computer chip that performs imprecise calculations could process some types of data thousands of times more efficiently than existing chips.

Ask a computer to add 100 and 100, and its answer will be 200. But what if it sometimes answered 202, and sometimes 199, or any other number within about 1 percent of the correct answer?

Arithmetic circuits that returned such imprecise answers would be much smaller than those in today’s computers. They would consume less power, and many more of them could fit on a single chip, greatly increasing the number of calculations it could perform at once. The question is how useful those imprecise calculations would be.

If early results of a research project at MIT are any indication, the answer is, Surprisingly useful. About a year ago, Joseph Bates, an adjunct professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, was giving a presentation at MIT and found himself talking to Deb Roy, a researcher at MIT’s Media Lab. Three years earlier, before the birth of his son, Roy had outfitted his home with 11 video cameras and 14 microphones, intending to flesh out what he calls the “surprisingly incomplete and biased observational data” about human speech acquisition. Data about a child’s interactions with both its caregivers and its environment could help confirm or refute a number of competing theories in developmental psychology. But combing through more than 100,000 hours of video for, say, every instance in which either a child or its caregivers says “ball,” together with all the child’s interactions with actual balls, is a daunting task for human researchers and artificial-intelligence systems alike. Bates had designed a chip that could perform tens of thousands of simultaneous calculations using sloppy arithmetic and was looking for applications that leant themselves to it.

Roy and Bates knew that algorithms for processing visual data are often fairly error-prone: A system that identifies objects in static images, for instance, is considered good if it’s right about half the time. Increasing a video-processing algorithm’s margin of error ever so slightly, the researchers reasoned, probably wouldn’t compromise its performance too badly. And if the payoff was the ability to do thousands of computations in parallel, Roy and his colleagues might be able to perform analyses of video data that they hadn’t dreamt of before.

High tolerance

So in May 2010, with funding from the U.S. Office of Naval Research, Bates came to MIT as a visiting professor, working with Roy’s group to determine whether video algorithms could be retooled to tolerate sloppy arithmetic. George Shaw, a graduate student in Roy’s group, began by evaluating an algorithm, commonly used in object-recognition systems, that distinguishes foreground and background elements in frames of video.

To simulate the effects of a chip with imprecise arithmetic circuits, Shaw rewrote the algorithm so that the results of all its numerical calculations were either raised or lowered by a randomly generated factor of between 0 and 1 percent. Then he compared its performance to that of the standard implementation of the algorithm. “The difference between the low-precision and the standard arithmetic was trivial,” Shaw says. “It was about 14 pixels out of a million, averaged over many, many frames of video.” “No human could see any of that,” Bates adds.

Of course, a really useful algorithm would have to do more than simply separate foregrounds and backgrounds in frames of video, and the researchers are exploring what tasks to tackle next. But Bates’ chip design looks to be particularly compatible with image and video processing. Although he hasn’t had the chip manufactured yet, Bates has used standard design software to verify that it will work as anticipated. Where current commercial computer chips often have four or even eight “cores,” or separate processing units, Bates’ chip has a thousand; since they don’t have to provide perfectly precise results, they’re much smaller than conventional cores.

But the chip has another notable idiosyncrasy. In most commercial chips, and even in many experimental chips with dozens of cores, any core can communicate with any other. But sending data across the breadth of a chip consumes much more time and energy than sending it locally. So in Bates’ chip, each core can communicate only with its immediate neighbors. That makes it much more efficient — a chip with 1,000 cores would really be 1,000 times faster than a conventional chip — but it also limits its use. Any computation that runs on the chip has to be easily divided into subtasks whose results have consequences mainly for small clusters of related subtasks — those running on the adjacent cores.

On the grid

Fortunately, video processing seems to fit the bill. Digital images are just big blocks of pixels, which can be split into smaller blocks of pixels, each of which is assigned its own core. If the task is to, say, determine whether the image changes from frame to frame, each core need report only on its own block. The core associated with the top left corner of the image doesn’t need to know what’s happening in the bottom right corner.

Bates has identified a few other problems that his chip also handles well. One is a standard problem in computer science called “nearest-neighbor search,” in which you have a set of objects that can each be described by hundreds or thousands of criteria, and you want to find the one that best matches some sample. Another is computer analysis of protein folding, in which you need to calculate all the different ways in which the different parts of a long biological molecule could interact with each other.

Bob Colwell, who was the chief architect on several of Intel’s Pentium processors and has been a private consultant since 2000, thinks that the most promising application of Bates’ chip could be in human-computer interactions. “There’s a lot of places where the machine does a lot of work on your behalf just to get information in and out of the machine suitable for a human being,” Colwell says. “If you put your hand on a mouse, and you move it a little bit, it really doesn’t matter where exactly the mouse is, because you’re in the loop. If you don’t like where the cursor goes, you’ll move it a little more. Real accuracy in the input is really not necessary.” A system that can tolerate inaccuracy in the input, Colwell argues, can also tolerate (some) inaccuracy in its calculations. The type of graphics processors found in most modern computers are another example, Colwell says, since they work furiously hard to produce 3-D images that probably don’t need to be rendered perfectly.

Bates stresses that his chip would work in conjunction with a standard processor, shouldering a few targeted but labor-intensive tasks, and Colwell says that, depending on how Bates’ chip is constructed, there could be some difficulty in integrating it with existing technologies. But he doesn’t see any of the technical problems as insurmountable. But “there’s going to be a fair amount of people out in the world that as soon as you tell them I’ve got a facility in my new chip that gives sort-of wrong answers, that’s what they’re going to hear no matter how you describe it,” he adds. “That’s kind of a non-technical barrier, but it’s real nonetheless.”

Roads that communicate with drivers and cars that communicate with each other already exist. Unfortunately, the technology usually has been available anywhere but the United States or in high-end vehicles few of us can afford. That changed this year with the democratization of intelligent-transit technology.

Anyone with a smartphone can get a navigation app like Waze that lets you avoid traffic tie-ups, and even those without cars can use apps like Car2Gether to hitch a ride. Nearly every municipal transit system has an app that (somewhat reliably) predicts the arrival of the next bus or train. And even drunks in the Big Apple can use their smartphones to find a cab.

Intelligent infrastructure projects also grew. We saw the real-world test of a "smart highway" with variable speed limits in Washington. Projects such as Streetline are helping motorists find parking spaces in congested cities and enabling cities to set parking fees.

One of the most ambitious projects is underway in an Idaho backyard, where Scott and Julie Brusaw are testing road surfaces embedded with solar panels that not only provide clean energy for charging EVs but also feature LED displays that change traffic lanes and display warning messages in real time. A similar project in New Zealand turns roadways into inductive charging stations that could make range anxiety a thing of the past.

Looking even further ahead, Swedish architect and urban strategist Mans Tham envisions a future where Los Angeles' famed highways are covered with photovoltaic cells (pictured above) that power the very city the freeways bisect. The panels would shield cars from weather, and algae ponds along the roadside would act as a giant carbon sink.

It's way out there, but we're always encouraged by outlandish ideas. If nothing else, they get people talking and thinking about what is possible.

Σε μια πόλη που δίνει προτεραιότητα στο αυτοκίνητο, μια ομάδα πολιτών μοιράζεται ένα κοινό στόχο: να βάλει το ποδήλατο στην καθημερινότητα των Αθηναίων. Κάθε Παρασκευή βράδυ, οργανώνει ανοιχτές ποδηλατοπορείες σε όλη την πόλη, που κοινοποιούνται μέσω κοινωνικών δικτύων. Η μαζικότητα των πορειών αυτών μπορεί να ασκήσει πίεση στους κρατικούς φορείς, ώστε το αστικό περιβάλλον να μετασχηματιστεί.

In a city that offers priority to the automobile, a group of citizens shares a common goal: to introduce the bicycle in the Athenians’ everyday life. Every Friday night, open bike rides are organized throughout the city, and communicated through social networks. Θεωρία Παιγνίων: Εγωισμός και Συνεργασία

Σκέφτομαι ποιος είναι ο πιο ευρύς αξιωματικός ισχυρισμός σχετικά με την ανθρώπινη φύση που να εγγυάται καθολική ή σχεδόν καθολική αποδοχή. Αμφιβάλλοντας για την καθολικότητα, προτείνω δοκιμαστικά το «κάθε άνθρωπος δρα εγωιστικά».

Δοκιμαστικά, συνδέω τον εγωισμό του κάθε ανθρώπου με μία έννοια ευτυχίας, ευχαρίστησης, ή χρησιμότητας. Δρω εγωιστικά σημαίνει δρω με τρόπο τέτοιο ώστε να μεγιστοποιηθεί η ευχαρίστηση ή η χρησιμότητά μου. Αν δρω εγωιστικά, τότε πώς γίνεται να νοιάζομαι για (κάποιους) άλλους; Το γρήγορο αντεπιχείρημα είναι ότι το καλό γι’ αυτούς τους άλλους δίνει ευχαρίστηση σ’ εμένα, άρα θέλω το καλό για αυτούς ώστε τελικά, πάλι, να μεγιστοποιήσω τη δική μου ευχαρίστηση. Αφού στη θεωρητική (;) δοκιμή που κάνω φαίνεται πως όλοι υπάρχουμε μεγιστοποιώντας ανά πάσα στιγμή την ευχαρίστησή μας, είναι εύλογο, δοκιμαστικά, να συνδέσω την ευχαρίστηση του κάθε ανθρώπου με μία αριθμητική τιμή. (Π.χ., ο Γιάννης όταν πηγαίνει στο σινεμά κερδίζει 10 βαθμούς ευχαρίστησης, ενώ όταν βλέπει ποδόσφαιρο κερδίζει 15 βαθμούς ευχαρίστησης.) Είναι επίσης εύλογο να υποθέσω πως οι ορθολογικοί άνθρωποι, όταν βρίσκονται σε καταστάσεις στρατηγικής αλληλεπίδρασης, παίρνουν αποφάσεις με στόχο τη μεγιστοποίηση της αριθμητικής τιμής ευχαρίστησής τους.
Αν, δοκιμαστικά, χρησιμοποιήσω τον όρο παιχνίδι για να περιγράψω μια τέτοια κατάσταση αλληλεπίδρασης, στο αποτέλεσμα της οποίας η αριθμητική τιμή τής ευχαρίστησής μου δεν εξαρτάται μόνο από τη δική μου επιλογή/πράξη, αλλά και από τις πράξεις των άλλων συμμετεχόντων, τότε η θεωρητική δοκιμή που επιχειρώ είναι το στήσιμο μιας θεωρίας παιγνίων.
Δοκιμαστικά, μπορώ να ονομάσω παιχνίδι οποιαδήποτε στρατηγική αλληλεπίδραση νοήμονων όντων, και να τη μελετήσω υπό το πρίσμα της θεωρίας παιγνίων (game theory). Τότε η θεωρία παιγνίων, ως κλάδος των εφαρμοσμένων μαθηματικών, συνιστά μια ποσοτική προσέγγιση στα προβλήματα των κοινωνικών επιστημών, προσφέροντας ένα μοντέλο πρόβλεψης της ανθρώπινης συμπεριφοράς. Ως τέτοιο μοντέλο χρησιμοποιείται στα οικονομικά, τις πολιτικές επιστήμες, τη βιολογία, την τεχνολογία, την επιστήμη υπολογιστών, τη φιλοσοφία.
Αλλά συνεχίζω τη θεωρητική δοκιμή με ένα πείραμα. Συλλαμβάνομαι από την αστυνομία για ένα έγκλημα, μαζί με έναν ακόμα ύποπτο. Η αστυνομία, μην έχοντας επαρκή αποδεικτικά στοιχεία, μας βάζει σε ξεχωριστά δωμάτια και προτείνει στον καθένα μας την ίδια συμφωνία. Αν μαρτυρήσω τον άλλον, ενώ ο άλλος παραμείνει σιωπηλός, αφήνομαι ελεύθερος, και ο άλλος καταδικάζεται σε κάθειρξη δέκα ετών. Αν τον μαρτυρήσω, και με μαρτυρήσει και αυτός, ο καθένας μας καταδικάζεται σε φυλάκιση πέντε ετών. Αν παραμείνω σιωπηλός, και παραμείνει και ο άλλος σιωπηλός, ο καθένας μας καταδικάζεται σε φυλάκιση έξι μηνών. Αν παραμείνω σιωπηλός, και ο άλλος με μαρτυρήσει, τότε εγώ καταδικάζομαι σε κάθειρξη δέκα ετών, και ο άλλος αφήνεται ελεύθερος. Ο καθένας μας δεν ξέρει τι αποφάσισε ο άλλος πριν αποφασίσει ο ίδιος. Πώς «πρέπει» να δράσω; Και πώς θα δράσω;
Με την υπόθεση ότι είμαι λογικός, θα μπω στην εξής διαδικασία σκέψης. Με το δεδομένο ότι ο άλλος ύποπτος θα με προδώσει, με συμφέρει να τον προδώσω, γιατί αν τον προδώσω θα φυλακιστώ για πέντε χρόνια, ενώ αν δεν τον προδώσω θα φυλακιστώ για δέκα χρόνια. Με το δεδομένο ότι ο άλλος ύποπτος θα παραμείνει σιωπηλός (θα συνεργαστεί μαζί μου), με συμφέρει να τον προδώσω, γιατί αν τον προδώσω θα αφεθώ ελεύθερος, ενώ αν δεν τον προδώσω θα φυλακιστώ για έξι μήνες. Δηλαδή σε κάθε περίπτωση με συμφέρει να τον προδώσω. Ομοίως θα σκεφτεί και ο άλλος ύποπτος, αν είναι λογικός. Ορθολογικά και εγωιστικά σκεπτόμενοι, θα επιλέξουμε αμφότεροι να προδώσουμε τον άλλον, και η ποινή θα είναι πέντε χρόνια για τον καθένα μας. Το να επιλέξουμε και οι δύο να προδώσουμε είναι σημείο ισορροπίας του παιχνιδιού, με την έννοια ότι κανείς μας δεν έχει συμφέρον να αλλάξει την απόφασή του, θεωρώντας δεδομένη και σταθερή την απόφαση του άλλου. Το παιχνίδι μάλιστα δεν έχει άλλα τέτοια σημεία ισορροπίας. Το καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα για τους υπόπτους μαζί ως ζεύγος θα ήταν να επιλέξουμε και οι δύο να συνεργαστούμε, τιμωρούμενοι αθροιστικά με δώδεκα μήνες. Αν ονομάσω κοινωνία το ζεύγος των δύο υπόπτων, τότε το αποτέλεσμα της ορθολογικής και εγωιστικής δράσης δεν συμπίπτει με την επιλογή που μεγιστοποιεί το συνολικό κοινωνικό συμφέρον. Η κοινωνία πληρώνει ακριβά τον εγωισμό των μελών της.
Η σύγκρουση μεταξύ κοινωνικά βέλτιστης επιλογής και ορθολογικής επιλογής δημιουργεί ένα αδιέξοδο για τους υπέρμαχους της συλλογικής δράσης. Για τον λογικά συνεπή νου, μία διέξοδος είναι η αξιωματική απόρριψη της θεωρητικής δοκιμής που κάνω, δηλαδή η απόρριψη της θεωρίας παιγνίων λόγω αξιωματικής αντίθεσης με τις θεμελιώδεις της παραδοχές. Άλλη διέξοδος είναι ο σχεδιασμός μηχανισμών, παρακλάδι της θεωρίας παιγνίων που μελετάει το σχεδιασμό παιχνιδιών τέτοιων ώστε εγωισμός και ορθολογικότητα από μέρους των παικτών να οδηγούν σε επιθυμητές για τον σχεδιαστή ιδιότητες, όπως π.χ., μεγιστοποίηση του κοινωνικού οφέλους. Δηλαδή ο σχεδιαστής του παιχνιδιού μπορεί να ρυθμίσει το παιχνίδι έτσι ώστε να ευθυγραμμίσει τα κίνητρα των εγωιστικών μελών της κοινωνίας με το κοινωνικό καλό.
Άλλη διέξοδος είναι η απόρριψη της κλασικής θεωρίας παιγνίων ως μοντέλου που προβλέπει αλάνθαστα την ανθρώπινη συμπεριφορά. Αν εγώ και ο άλλος ύποπτος επαναλάβουμε το «δίλημμα του φυλακισμένου» πολλές (αλλά πεπερασμένες σε αριθμό) φορές, σύμφωνα με τη θεωρία παιγνίων η βέλτιστη συμπεριφορά (και το μοναδικό σημείο ισορροπίας) είναι η εγωιστική προδοσία σε κάθε γύρο, στρατηγική που δεν συνάδει με την παρατηρούμενη ανθρώπινη συμπεριφορά. Όταν οι αλληλεπιδράσεις επαναλαμβάνονται για μεγάλη χρονική περίοδο με πολλούς παίκτες, οι εγωιστικές στρατηγικές μακροπρόθεσμα αποδίδουν (με εγωιστικά κριτήρια) λιγότερο από πιο αλτρουιστικές. Η συνεργασία είναι μια εξελικτικά σταθερή στρατηγική· οι οργανισμοί που συνεργάζονται έχουν μεγαλύτερες πιθανότητες να αναπαραχθούν περισσότερο και να διαιωνίσουν τα γονίδιά τους. Η θεωρία της ανταγωνιστικής φυσικής επιλογής σύμφωνα με το νόμο του δυνατότερου, που χρησιμοποιείται και ως επιχείρημα υπέρ του laissez-faire καπιταλισμού, αδυνατεί να εξηγήσει γιατί η συνεργασία και ο αλτρουισμός περνούν πετυχημένα το εξελικτικό φίλτρο. Για όσους δέχτηκαν την αρχική μου παραδοχή σχετικά με την ανθρώπινη φύση, είναι αιφνιδιαστικά ενθαρρυντική η διαπίστωση του παραδόξου: η φυσική επιλογή ευνοεί τη συνεργασία και συλλογική δράση μεταξύ a priori εγωιστικών ατόμων.

Η κοινωνία των δικτύων και ειδικά η κουλτούρα του διαδικτύου των τελευταίων είκοσι ετών άλλαξε τα δεδομένα της εργασίας, της επικοινωνίας και του ίδιου του τρόπου ζωής μας. Τα αναρίθμητα και συνεχώς εξελισσόμενα ψηφιακά δίκτυα ατόμων, θεσμών, κινημάτων, οργανισμών βασίστηκαν στις νέες δυνατότητες της τεχνολογίας άλλα διαμόρφωσαν και νέες μορφές οικονομίας και αξίας που ταιριάζουν στο νέο ρευστό χρόνο και άυλο χώρο. Η συμμετοχή, η συλλογική διάνοια, η κοινή και ελεύθερη γνώση είναι βασικά χαρακτηριστικά που ισχυροποίησαν τη νέα ψηφιακή πραγματικότητα. Το πλήθος των ατόμων που μετέχουν καθημερινά σε αυτή και πιστεύουν στις δυνατότητες της, άφησε πίσω τα όρια μεταξύ εργασίας και ελεύθερου χρόνου και αποτέλεσε μία νέα γενιά παραγωγών και καταναλωτών μαζί, μια νέα μορφή δημιουργικής τάξης, που θέλει να ξεχωρίζει, να μαθαίνει και να μοιράζεται.

Η “οικονομία της προσοχής”, η “οικονομία του δώρου”, ο “κοινός πλούτος”, η “άυλη”, “συγκινησιακή” αλλά να ξεχωρίζει, να μαθαίνει και να μοιράζεται. Η “οικονομία της προσοχής”, η “οικονομία του δώρου”, ο “κοινός πλούτος”, η “άυλη”, “συγκινησιακή” αλλά και “επισφαλής εργασία” είναι βασικές έννοιες που περιγράφουν τα φαινόμενα της σημερινής πραγματικότητας.

Πώς εκτιμώνται όμως σε συνάρτηση με την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση; Ποιος ο ρόλος των δικτύων σε αυτή; Μπορούν να προσφέρουν εναλλακτικά μοντέλα; Ή αποτελούν μία ψευδαίσθηση που συντελεί στις δυσκολίες και τις αντιξοότητες που το σύγχρονο πλήθος καλείται να αντιμετωπίσει;

Η νέα διαδικτυακή έκθεση που φιλοξενείται στο website του Εθνικού Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης, επιδιώκει να δώσει έμφαση στις νέες αξίες, τα πιθανά κόστη και τις νέες μορφές εργασίας και συνεργασίας που αναδύονται στη νέα συνδεδεμένη πραγματικότητα.

Στο πλαίσιο αυτό παρουσιάζει:
1_ Έργα καλλιτεχνών που σχολιάζουν τις νέες μορφές οικονομίας του διαδικτύου
2_ Πρωτοβουλίες και ανοιχτές πλατφόρμες ανεξάρτητων δημιουργών που προωθούν τη χρήση του ελεύθερου και ανοιχτού λογισμικού, την ανταλλαγή υλικού και τη συνεργασία
3_ Τοποθετήσεις και κείμενα από θεωρητικούς γύρω από τα δίκτυα, την οικονομία και την τέχνη.

Πώς χαρτογραφούνται τα κοινά αγαθά στο αστικό περιβάλλον; Πώς αποτυπώνεται η δυναμική τους; Τι ρόλο παίζουν στη ζωή της σύγχρονης πόλης;

Η ισπανική κολεκτίβα, που είναι γνωστή για μελέτες και χαρτογραφήσεις πόλεων με κοινωνικοπολιτικό χαρακτήρα, σε συνεργασία με μία διεπιστημονική ομάδα αποτελούμενη από καθηγητές, ερευνητές και φοιτητές από πανεπιστημιακά ιδρύματα της Αθήνας θα εξετάσει σε ένα εργαστήριο επτά ημερών τι σημαίνει ο όρος “commons/κοινά”, ποιά η σημασία τους σε ιδιαίτερες οικονομικές περιόδους και πώς εντοπίζονται αυτά στον πραγματικό και ψηφιακό χώρο μίας πόλης. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τη σύγχρονη θεωρία σχετικά με τα “κοινά”, η ομάδα του εργαστηρίου θα αναζητήσει ζώνες συνεργασίας και κοινής παραγωγής, κοινότητες διαμόρφωσης κοινών αγαθών καθώς και τρόπους οργάνωσης και υποστηρίξης τους. Το υλικό που θα συλλεχθεί από την ομάδα του εργαστηρίου θα αποτελέσει το περιεχόμενο ενός ανοιχτού διαδικτυακού χάρτη και άλλου οπτικοακουστικού υλικού που θα παρουσιαστεί στο Project Room του μουσείου και στο διαδίκτυο με την ευκαιρία της έκθεσης που θα ακολουθήσει.

Σημειώνεται ότι το εργαστήριο θα ξεκινήσει με συζητήσεις ανοιχτές στο κοινό την Τετάρτη 1 Δεκεμβρίου στις 15.00 γύρω από τα Κοινά Αγαθά και την πόλη της Αθήνας.

Την Τετάρτη 8 Δεκεμβρίου στις 19.00 οι Hackitectura θα μιλήσουν στο κοινό για το έργο τους και τα αποτελέσματα του εργαστηρίου στην Αθήνα. Aμέσως μετά θα πραγματοποιηθούν τα εγκαίνια του νέου έργου.

Οι Hackitectura είναι ένας δυναμικός πυρήνας από αρχιτέκτονες, καλλιτέχνες, προγραμματιστές και ακτιβιστές που ιδρύθηκε από τους José Pérez de Lama, Sergio Moreno and Pablo de Soto το 1999 . Η δράση τους αξιοποιεί τις νέες τεχνολογίες για να διαμορφωθούν προσωρινοί χώροι που διαφεύγουν των τυπικών δομών ελέγχου και παρακολούθησης της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας. Χρησιμοποιούν το ελεύθερο λογισμικό και τις τεχνολογίες επικοινωνίας για να ανατρέψουν τις δομές εξουσίας ξεκινώντας με μία οργάνωση από κάτω και δημιουργώντας εναλλακτικές συνδέσεις μεταξύ ανόμοιων περιοχών. Η ομάδα επίσης ερευνά την επίδραση της επικοινωνίας και της τεχνολογίας σε φυσικούς χώρους, τη διαμόρφωση κοινωνικών δικτύων και την αξιοποίηση αυτών για ακτιβιστικούς σκοπούς. Προηγούμενες γνώστες χαρτογραφήσεις της ομάδας πραγματοποιήθηκαν στο στενό του Γιβραλτάρ, στην Αστούριας και στη λωρίδα της Γάζας.

On Monday, their vision became a reality when the Berkeley Student Food Collective threw open its doors on Bancroft Way, directly across from Eshleman Hall and steps from Sproul Plaza. By afternoon, it was buzzing with customers.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, most grown within 150 miles, filled shelves and a refrigerator case, alongside coolers stocked with Straus milk, Glaum eggs and Columbia Gorge juices, all organic. Bulk bins offered dozens of staples, from flour to rice to chocolate chips, that students - not to mention faculty and staff - can take home for a meal or a batch of cookies.

Wraps, sandwiches, coffee and tea also will be sold, offering a "real food" lunch option close to campus.

By operating as a nonprofit collective, with members donating two hours of free labor a week, the store hopes to keep prices low. Since August, when they signed a lease on a former nail salon, members have been hard at work converting the 600-square-foot space to a food market.

A local artist filled the walls with a brightly colored mural showing farm-to-table scenes, along with giant vegetables. The artwork provides an instant education in the store's principles and the political, environmental and humane aspects of food production. Big leaves dangling from a tree limb that appears to curl around the top of the narrow room blaze with the collective's red-lipped logo and definitions like "sustainable - practices which can be carried out indefinitely without irreversible damage or resource depletion."

"We want this to be a living classroom," says operations manager Alex Stone, who graduated in 2009 and is the store's only paid employee. "We want to make sure people are educated about their food choices, which is where this all started."
